September 2021
Subject:Â Cross Country Trip
September 4, 2021: San Francisco, Los Angeles
Week 34, Part 1: Feel like I’m falling behind here! I headed down to San Francisco to hang with the lovely Gregg Armstrong along with reconnecting with Jayme Locsin after our adventures in Yellowstone. Then it was down to North Hollywood to see Jimmy McGann and explore around LA.
September 5, 2021: San Diego
Week 34, Part 2: Thomas Geary flew out from Fargo to join me for a much needed vacation in San Diego. Lazy beach days, palm trees, and GORGEOUS weather. We got some much needed dancing in at a techno even (dark techno, fuck yes!) And after years of searching I FOUND MY FAVORITE BEER AGAIN (Cherry chocolate quadrupel). San Diego is impressing me so far but I’ll revisit after I have time to experience the city from somewhere that isn’t a beach resort
September 11, 2021: San Diego
Week 35: Still in San Diego but leaving tomorrow. It’s a beautiful paradise of a city but I could never live here. It’s too sunny. Too pretty. Too nice. Heading into the desert next.
September 16, 2021: Pheonix
Week 36: I was awe struck as I drove into Arizona. I’d never seen the desert before and it is breathtaking, in an expansive and desolate way. It’s been 110° every day and only gets into the 80s at night, but that feels chilly compared to what you must get used to here. I didn’t get to explore much because I’ve absolutely been resting. But much like the snowy winter in Pittsburgh, I respect the resiliency of the people who live here. I would have liked to have more time to understand the culture better. Heading to camp at the Grand Canyon now, likely won’t have signal.
September 24, 2021: Kaibab National Forest, Williams
Week 37, Part 1: Camping and Williams. I put my little SUV to good use while car camping in the Kaibab National Forest. It was refreshing and comfortable, though I was not prepared for the 40° nights especially after sleeping at 80° in Phoenix. I enjoyed the cold, dewy mornings and waking up with the rising sun. I was surrounded by howling coyotes, was approached by a massive male elk while doing yoga, and had an owl dive into the ground and kill something only 5 feet away from me. I also got to explore the adorable town of Williams and hung out with Justin Ward who I ran into while shopping. We were surprisingly connected already through the rave scene. Small world!
September 26, 2021: Grand Canyon
Week 37, Part 2: Almost forgot to post! But this one is easy. It’s grand. It’s real grand. It’s like, unfathomably grand.
September 27, 2021: Albuquerque
Week 37, Part 3: Albuquerque. I was not expecting to be so blown away by this city. It’s nestled between a mountain, a river, and a volcano. The landscape is gorgeous. The highways are open and smooth. The architecture is so unique. The culture is overflowing. The food is ridiculous. And it’s all so spacious and clean! I met some really cool people there and made new friends. I can see why the people of New Mexico have so much pride in their state.
